With a Vengeance by Annette Dashofy - #review #giveaway

Paramedic Zoe Chambers and the rest of rural Monongahela County’s EMS and fire personnel are used to wading into the middle of trouble to rescue the sick and the injured. But when someone with an ax to grind seeks retribution by staging accident scenes and gunning down the first responders, Zoe finds herself forced to not only treat her own brethren of the front lines, but also, in her role as deputy coroner, seek out whoever is killing her friends.

At the same time, Vance Township Police Chief Pete Adams races to track down a gun, a mysterious all-terrain vehicle, and the sniper before Zoe goes back on duty, placing herself—and Pete—firmly in the gunman’s crosshairs.

MY REVIEW

This was my second 'ride-in' with Zoe, her partner Earl, and the Monongahela County EMS.  (The first was Lost Legacy, reviewed in September of 2014.)  This time, someone seems to have a grudge  against the entire squad.  What kind of sick individual(s) target first responders, especially the EMTs?  So who nurses that kind of grudge?

The situation must have been exceptionally difficult for Zoe.  In addition to being an EMT, she was also deputy coroner, and in that capacity, could conceivably be assisting at the autopsy of some of her friends and co-workers.  I don't know that I could handle that.  Luckily, the head coroner is sensitive to her situation.

I really had no idea of the twist that would occur after several of the ambushes had been conducted.  Ms. Dashofy hid the killer's motive well, making for a very suspenseful read.  Every ambush ratcheted up the tension, every death even more so.  Can you imagine that phone call?  EMT:  "I can't come in to work today.  Operator:  And your reason?  EMT:  "The better-than-average chance of getting killed in the line of duty.   Being a first responder necessitates a high degree of dedication and commands a high degree of respect from the populace they serve.

In times of crisis, people often pull together.  Dashofy's first responders certainly did.  On a couple of days, police protection accompanied each ambulance call.  People covered extra shifts so those who worked closest with the people who died could go to their funerals.  Even Zoe pulled some dispatch duty to help.  Everyone should have friends like that.

I hope Zoe Chambers has a long and healthy life and career.  I would like to see what happens in her relationship with Pete, the Chief of Police for Vance Township.  And I hope she doesn't slip in the tub.  Only time will tell.
