#Review/#Giveaway: Trawling for Trouble by Shelley Freydont

The author of Independence Slay is back as intrepid event planner Liv Montgomery discovers something fishy going on beneath Celebration Bay’s deceptively calm surface.

Liv Montgomery knew that asking Celebration Bay’s newspaper owner-slash-ne’er-do-well Chaz Bristow to teach her how to fish meant angling for more than a lesson in sinkers and chum. Like asking him to spearhead the fund raiser that’ll benefit the town’s community center. And there are worse ways to spend the afternoon than out on the town’s picturesque lake.

But it’s not long before Liv reels in a huge catch—already quite dead. It’s the body of an unknown man, and it was no accidental drowning. This floater was murdered. While local authorities investigate, it’s Liv and Chaz who stumble upon a shocking motive, and become live bait for a ruthless killer determined to keep his secrets down in the deep.

Includes exclusive previews of the next Celebration Bay mystery, Trick or Deceit, and A Gilded Grave, the first book in Shelley Freydont’s new Newport Gilded Age Mystery series.

REVIEW

Trawling for Trouble was my first experience with Ms. Freydont's writing, and it is the first of many of her books that are now finding their way onto my TBR (to-be-read) list.

In a way, her writing reminds me of the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  Let me explain.  Some cozy mysteries are not all that comfortable.  Some go the other way and are almost cloyingly sweet.  Trawling for Trouble was 'just right'.

The heroine, Liv, notices men, but doesn't drool over them.  She is willing to try new things but also knows when she is out of her league ("Do you want to help the boat come alongside, or hold onto the dead guy with your fishing rod?").  There is interest from one (or more) males of the species that, to put it bluntly, comes from north of their shoulders.

I also liked the concern and respect with which the two veteran characters were portrayed.  They might be a bit quirky, but they put their lives on hold (and on the line) for the country, and if they need help when they return home, then by golly, they should get it.

Bottom line.  If Celebration Bay were a real place, I would definitely visit.  I think y'all would enjoy it too!  (In fact, I just got back from adding every single one of her books listed on GoodReads to my TBR - and there are a bunch of them!  At this rate, I'll never, ever finish my TBR.  But the flip side - and the good news - is that I'll never, ever be without something good to read!)

  2. i think the book Trawling for Trouble sounds so good. It is so funny as a friend came over and he is going to take my hubby out to fish and we were laughing as neither of them fish. But I really am glad that the book giveaway is a print and one that i can review and would love to read the one that is featured here but must have print as severly disabled

    1. Sorry to hear about your troubles, PT. My FIL loves to fish, but is confined to a motorized wheelchair most of the time, and so his fix-it-up boats are now sitting idle, unfortunately. Best of luck finding the print copies that you need!

    1. Indeed, Shilpa! (Although, frankly, if having to live-bait a hook did not turn me off enough, the possibility of coming up with a corpse has all but turned me off to fishing completely!) ;)
