MY THOUGHTS

My first thought, even before I got the actual book was "How do you 'review' the Bible"?  Talk about intimidating!  And while normally, I would read a book cover to cover in preparation for a review, this book as over 1600 pages!  But then, a Bible is not meant to be read through once and put on the shelf to gather dust.

Of course, we're not really reviewing the Bible, but the particular set up and version, in other words, there are so many other versions and translations of the Bible out there, do we really need another?

To answer my own question, I wish this book had been available oh....a few decades ago.

When I was twelve, and questioning my beliefs and thoughts and abilities, I was asked a question in Sunday School.  I knew the instructor expected me to respond with a quote from the church's beliefs.  At the time, I wasn't sure what I believed and did not feel it would be right to say it if I didn't believe it.  The Sunday School teacher gave me a very public 'dressing down' and at that point I began to emotionally distance myself from the church.

I had been in the church nursery when I was 3 days old.  I was in Sunday School classes almost from the time I could talk and was looking forward to the time I could attend the regular service as an adult.  It would be 15 years before I returned to the fold.

So while I can identify with the angst of the teenage years, it is also true that the problems facing our young ladies today are different from the ones I faced growing up.

Many times, reading the daily devotions brought a smile to my face.  Such as in "Running Ahead of God" (p20 - from Project Inspired by Nicole Weider), where the author talks about God's promise to Sarah (of bearing children) increasingly 'bogus' as the years went by.  I never thought to see the word 'bogus' in the Bible ... but it fits.

In my opinion, this edition of the Bible is a wonderful outreach for tween and teen girls, as they navigate the increasingly complex world on their way to adulthood.

God's promises to 'mankind' (which includes our young ladies) are highlighted for easy location and memorization.

Whether reading the text of the NIV version of the Bible, or one of the daily readings, or one of the character profiles, each trip into this book felt like a comforting blanket being wrapped around my shoulders - that's the space I am in at the moment.  Others may see it as 'donning the full armor of God', if bravery is their need.  There is something for everyone - no matter their age, gender, nationality, or even religion.

For the Christian family, it is hard to imagine a better physical gift to give a girl in or approaching her teenage years.  My copy is going to my daughter 'officially' on her 13th birthday next February.  When I told her I had requested a copy specifically because of her, she pointed out that she was not yet a teen.  But she's already facing some teen-sized issues and my prayer is that she will be able to use the NIV Bible for Teen Girls: Growing in Hope, Faith, Love to nourish her most important relationship - with God.
