Theodora “Teddi” Donovan and Calvin Wynne have always hated each other. They didn't have a choice after Teddi's bootlegger father killed Calvin's and left them both orphaned. The scandal has fueled gossip in quiet, quaint Brookhurst, New York, for over a decade. When a friendship develops between them as teenagers, they are ridiculed and shunned by the strict society that dictates life in their town. As they grow older, friendship turns into love, and Teddi and Calvin have to choose between their future and the specter of their past. Spanning continents and decades, Forget Me Not is a coming-of-age story about truth, self-reliance, and the freeing power of love.

MY REVIEW
Those poor young folks. I was a bit surprised that the reason for the hard feelings between the families was not spelled out sooner in the book, because it's a huge elephant in the middle of the room. An awkward situation that everyone knows about but nobody wants to mention. It's obvious there is a problem and the two families don't sit at the same table at the town picnic. The story reminds me of Romeo and Juliet, with a twist.
I loved watching the two, Teddi and Calvin, grow closer together as the story progressed. It's hard enough being a teen-aged young adult without all that baggage of their histories waiting to be lugged from point A to point B. That they were able to break far enough away from conventions and families to allow space for one in the other's life, and vice versa, was something of a miracle.
Forget Me Not is a heart-warming sweet romance, a story of a young love that few in the town would have thought possible. Trying not to give away too much, and using the R&J metaphor once more, maybe the Friar will actually get there in time this go 'round.

ReplyDeleteInteresting to compare it to Romeo and Juliet. That and the Hatfields and the McCoys were the two things I thought of while reading your review.
ReplyDeleteI really like the cover to this book and it caught my eye immediately! I also really like the sound of it being similar to Romeo and Juliet seeing as I like that story. Curious to try this one myself!
