Watching the Detectives by Julie Mulhern - #review #giveaway

Ellison Russell wanted a decorator, not a corpse. Too bad she finds Mrs. White in the study killed with a revolver. Things go from bad to worse when she finds Mr. White in the dining room killed with a candlestick. With so many bodies, is it any wonder Detective Anarchy Jones’ new partner considers Ellison a suspect?

With the country club gossips talking a mile a minute, an unexpected cocktail party, a visit from Aunt Sis, and a romantic decision, Ellison hardly has time to think about murder. Unfortunately, the killer has plenty of time to think about her.

MY REVIEW

Usually when you leave the decorator alone in your house, you worry about some of the family silver disappearing ... especially if he was your ex-husband's (your only marriage) second wife.  Can we say,  'AWKWARD'!?!  Especially because old used-to-be has now moved on to even higher numbers of wives (and ex-wives, I suppose).

You don't imagine that your reward for doing a mission of mercy for your housekeeper will be to find said decorator dead with the family hot lead embedded in her skull.

So we know by now (this is the 5th installment in the 'Country Club Murders') that Ellison is divorced, socially well-connected, not short of plastic and paper in her designer wallet.  But I kid her, because she really is a nice person.  She just has an unfortunate habit of running across (figuratively) dead bodies...and ticking off some really unbalanced bad guys/gals.

Luckily, Ellison's 'we're just going to pretend that we don't have a raging case of mutual admirations' gentleman friend is a police detective.  Anarchy Jones knows Ellison and knows she would not have killed the decorator, but his new partner is not so sure.  And while I'm at it, I'm going to express a genuflecting 'we're not worthy' appreciation for that name - Anarchy.  Isn't that the best name for a police detective, someone sworn to uphold the law, could possibly have?  If I were still in the child-bearing years, I might have had to use that name for one of the kiddos!

Now, I know I've been a little more irreverent than usual in this review.  But there's a reason for that.  Think back, if you will to the Star Trek movies featuring the original cast.  My favorite of the six (or seven, if you count 'Generations', was the fourth installment, "The Journey Home" - with the whales George and Gracie.  Why did I enjoy it so much?  Because the cast were comfortable enough in their characters' skins to poke a little fun at themselves.  (I believe Ms. Mulhern shares this trait - look at her bio!)

If you like warm-blooded, well-thought-out characters, described with many hyper-hyphenated adjectives, consider adding Watching the Detectives to your shelf.  If you like engaging stories that confirm the theory that too much of a good thing is never enough, and you believe that snark is the frosting on the birthday cake, work your way through the whole Country Club Murder series!  You'll be glad you did.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Julie Mulhern is the USA Today bestselling author of The Country Club Murders. She is a Kansas City native who grew up on a steady diet of Agatha Christie. She spends her spare time whipping up gourmet meals for her family, working out at the gym and finding new ways to keep her house spotlessly clean – and she’s got an active imagination. Truth is – she’s an expert at calling for take-out, she grumbles about walking the dog and the dust bunnies under the bed have grown into dust lions.
