Back at home, Vance Township’s Chief of Police Pete Adams must deal not only with the commissioner’s homicide, but with an influx of meth and a subsequent rash of drug overdoses in his rural community. Bodies keep turning up while suspects keep disappearing. However little else matters when he learns that half a continent away, a brutal killer has Zoe in his sights.
No Way Home is the 3rd book in the "Zoe Chambers" series that I've been able to read and review, the previous two being With a Vengeance and Lost Legacy. (The Legacy post also has an interview with the author from 2014, so be sure to check that out.) From the first chapter I knew I missed an installment, because some characters had retired, Earl had been shot and the 'old' emergency dispatcher had been fired!
Zoe and Co. are getting ready for a morning trail ride when a horse ambles back to the barn, sans rider. Never a good sign - as Zoe proves when she finds the body of a county commissioner a short ride from the farmyard. Most evidence points to the man falling off the horse and being dragged. But something fidgets at the back of Zoe's mind. Now that's a good sign, because anything fidgets around in Zoe's mind means things are about to get interesting!
Drugs have also wormed their way into this small corner of Pennsylvania, and the newest import is killing several of the township's youths, but Pete is left to investigate that as Zoe accompanies her friend, who is going to track down her missing son in New Mexico.
Aside from the story, which is once again fabulous, one of my favorite things about No Way Home is that it brings back some familiar elements (character, setting, etc.), there is evidence of innovation as well. The separate investigations in two very different places, mean that Zoe and Pete are spending some time away from each other. But are the investigations truly separate? Only the latter pages of the book will tell, because I won't! (But then I'm not a fan of spoilers.)
Make your way to No Way Home's pages. You'll uncover a wonderful addition to Zoe's story, as well as a superb story in and of itself. But I definitely suggest reading the whole series. The more you read, the more you'll find to love.
